Bank of America Races To Fix Mythos-Found FlawsIs your establishment prepared for AI-powered vulnerability detection when even major financial institutions are struggling to keep pace? Anthropic's Mythos exposed numerous Bank of America security flaws, raising questions about cybersecurity readiness. Learn more here.

What Is Mythos?

Claude Mythos is an advanced frontier AI model developed by Anthropic that represents a massive leap in multi-step reasoning and agentic coding. It shocked the tech industry by autonomously discovering thousands of critical zero-day software vulnerabilities across every major operating system and web browser, including uncovering bugs that went unnoticed by human specialists for decades.

Because its potent dual-use nature allows it to instantly generate working cyber exploits, Anthropic initially withheld the model from the public to prevent its weaponization. Instead, the company launched Project Glasswing, a defensive consortium that provides restricted access to tech giants, financial institutions, and government agencies for proactive AI-driven code analysis and security patching.

Bank of America Scrambles To Patch Critical Software Vulnerabilities

Bank of America was apparently among the major financial institutions that gained access to Mythos, and the results revealed just how demanding AI-powered vulnerability detection can be. The model helped uncover numerous software security flaws in the bank's internal systems and third-party software. While finding them was a major step toward improving cybersecurity, fixing them proved to be a much bigger undertaking.

According to CEO Brian Moynihan, Bank of America hired 1,000 external contractors in the second quarter of 2026 to help address the vulnerabilities. That's on top of its existing 3,000 technical staff. The additional workers are still assisting with security patching efforts as of October.

During its third-quarter earnings call, Moynihan disclosed "a couple hundred million dollars plus" of expenses related to software remediation and anti-money-laundering compliance work, although he didn't specify how much went toward fixing Bank of America security flaws discovered by Mythos.

Industry Giants Are Taking Mythos Seriously

Other finance leaders like JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon revealed that hundreds of employees were working full-time with industry partners to prepare for emerging AI security threats. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon also acknowledged Mythos' advanced capabilities and confirmed close collaboration with Anthropic.

Technology companies have reported equally striking results. Mozilla previously found 22 security-sensitive bugs through work with an earlier Anthropic model. When it later tested an early version of Mythos Preview, Firefox 150 shipped with fixes for 271 vulnerabilities identified during the initial evaluation. Palo Alto Networks also put frontier AI models to work across more than 130 products, and its initial scan resulted in 26 CVEs representing 75 separate issues.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

The discovery of Bank of America security flaws highlights a growing concern for businesses of all sizes. While Mythos remains unavailable to the general public, you can focus on the following practical cybersecurity risk mitigation measures:

  • Regular software updates and security patches
  • Routine vulnerability scans
  • Multi-factor authentication for sensitive accounts
  • Limited employee access privileges
  • Secure, regularly tested data backups
  • A documented incident response plan

The priority isn't adopting the latest AI security tools but ensuring that your existing defenses are strong enough to handle threats before they become emergencies.
